Mid-century houses and their wiring

Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Vista, Leimert Park and the blocks along Crenshaw were built out mostly between the 1930s and the 1950s. That means original panels of 60 to 100 amps, early non-metallic cable, ungrounded branch circuits, and in the hillside houses, long runs through crawlspaces and under floors that are awkward to access. Some of the post-war garden apartment developments in the area have their own quirks around shared services and common-area distribution.

The hillside streets above Coliseum and along the Baldwin Hills slopes bring practical complications: detached garages below street level, long feeders to rear structures, and crawlspaces that are tight at one end of the house. It affects how a job is priced and how long it takes, so we look before quoting rather than after.

Permits and utility

This area is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits and inspections go through the Department of Building and Safety and electric service is LADWP. Service changes need a utility disconnect, which is what determines the schedule on a panel replacement.
