Service area

Electrician in West Adams, Los Angeles

Our shop is on West Jefferson Boulevard, inside the neighborhood. West Adams is where most of our week happens, and where the electrical problems are the most consistent.

Old houses, original wiring

West Adams has one of the largest concentrations of pre-1930 housing in Los Angeles: Craftsman bungalows, Queen Anne and Victorian houses, and Spanish Colonial Revival built out along Adams and Jefferson before the Second World War. The architecture is the reason people move here and the reason our phone rings. Houses of that age were wired for a few lamps and an iron, and many still carry some portion of their original knob-and-tube.

What we see repeatedly: a 60- or 100-amp service feeding a house that now has central air, a remodeled kitchen and a car in the driveway; two-prong receptacles throughout; original conductors buried under blown-in attic insulation; and decades of additions spliced into boxes nobody can reach. None of that is unusual here and none of it is unfixable.

Historic preservation constraints

Several West Adams blocks sit inside Historic Preservation Overlay Zones, which affects anything visible from the street: meter and panel locations on a front elevation, exterior conduit runs, and exterior fixtures. We plan routes and equipment placement with that in mind rather than discovering it at inspection.

Permits and utility

West Adams is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits and inspections go through the Department of Building and Safety, and electric service is LADWP. Service changes require a utility disconnect and reconnect, which is the part of a panel upgrade that drives the schedule.

Response time from Jefferson Boulevard

Being based here means an emergency call in the 90016 and 90018 area is a short drive at any hour, including the middle of the night. For scheduled work it means we can stop by for a look without turning it into a production.

West Adams questions

Can you work on a house in an HPOZ?

Yes. The practical effect on electrical work is mostly about visible exterior changes: where a panel or meter can go on a street-facing elevation, how conduit is run, and what exterior fixtures look like. We plan for it before filing.

Is knob-and-tube wiring in my West Adams house dangerous?

It depends entirely on its condition and on what has been done to it. Intact, uncovered, unspliced knob-and-tube in light service is different from the same wiring buried in insulation and extended three times. We assess it rather than quote a rewire sight unseen. See home rewiring.

How fast can you get here at night?

Faster than almost anywhere else we serve, because the shop is in the neighborhood. We still give you an honest window based on the calls ahead of you.

Do you work on the duplexes and fourplexes along Adams?

Yes. Small multifamily work is a large part of what we do here, including unit turnovers, common-area lighting and house panels.
